Gee Six Five, whose real name is Olpha Selepe, has passed away. The 65-year-old had a brief shot to fame after releasing her hit single Obani Laba Bantu recently.
Gee Six Five’s passing was confirmed by her niece Sbu Mpungose in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Taking to Twitter, Mpungose said:
“My beloved aunt, MumNcane, who many of you know as Gee Six Five, is no more. She displayed leadership throughout her life, was the epitome of fearlessness and inspired many with her single Obani Labantu. Mthiya, Shandu kaNdaba, Sontshikazi. RIP Gee Six Five”
Since then, messages of condolences have poured in for the academic and Amapiano star.
The university’s official Twitter account had posted: “PhD student in Education and musician Ms Olpha Selepe, known by her stage name Gee Six Five, is trending since the release of her popular song Obani Lababantu.
The music video is quickly approaching 100,000 views on YouTube and the single is charting in the iTunes SA top 20.”
